ENGLISH LANGUAGE TUTOR
FOR THE TAKEO ORPHANAGE CHILDREN

Since 2015, the Ron Abney Educational Fund has provided the Takeo Orphanage with an English tutor at an annual cost of USD $1000 per year for classes, books and supplies. While many Cambodian public schools teach English, students are charged a daily fee of 25 cents or more to take these classes. This amount represents as much as half a day’s adult wage, making such classes prohibitively expensive for the orphanage to fund on its own.

English is the de facto international language in Cambodia; therefore, those who speak English have a better chance of securing jobs in commerce, science, technology, politics, education and programming. In addition, many of the textbooks used in Cambodian universities are in English. As such, the Ron Abney Educational Fund deems that proficiency in the English language significantly helps the Takeo orphans to be better prepared to attend university and/or secure good jobs in Cambodia.

CLASSROOM ROOF REPAIR PROJECT

During their visit to the Takeo Orphanage in June of 2019, RAEF President Lee Darter and her mother-in-law Pam Shuman attended classes being conducted by RAEF’s English tutor Roeng Samphors. They soon noticed that the outdoor pavilion where the lessons were being taught had no fans and the roof leaked in several places. Pam generously offered to pay for the installation of a new roof, as well as the addition of a PA system and several fans. The roof was completed within a few weeks, and now the students have a dry, well-ventilated venue for their classes!
